23-27 November 2022 Filmhuis The Hague, Netherlands
Focus program: GAZE
The 14th edition of the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival (ENFF) takes place from 23 to 27 November 2022. ENFF presents a selection of recent and high quality films from East and Southeast Europe. The festival focuses on productions which would often otherwise not be screened in theaters in the Netherlands. The carefully compiled program provides insight into the reality of the cultural, political and socio-economic conditions in the region, and the development of its local younger and older talents. The program includes feature films, documentaries, short films and animations. It connects different genres and themes; from current developments in cinema, to historical specialties; from experimental documentaries to art house films. The festival as well engages current debates and questions regarding film aesthetics, ethics, social issues, film theory and artistic forms. The ENFF annually takes place in November in Filmhuis The Hague, and goes On Tour in Amsterdam (Rialto, de Balie, Kriterion), Rotterdam (Kino) and Utrecht (Louis Hartlooper Complex).
The focus program GAZE looks at how specific closed communities are being depicted by filmmakers – outsiders. Is it necessary for a filmmaker to speak the language of hers/his film protagonist, whose gaze it is in a documentary? Next to selection of films, we’ll also have a Film Talk about the topic.
CLOSE UP – UKRAINE
Our closing film brings a disturbing and compelling story from the country that has been the focus of the world’s attention for the last ten months. Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom explores the courage of the Ukrainian people, fiercely determined to stand their ground until ‘the last drop of blood’. The director is Oscar-nominated Evgeny Afineevsky. Next to the closing film from Ukraine, we screen three Ukrainian works in progress, all directed by female authors. The aim is to bring them one step forward in their process, to give them visibility, and constructive feedback that might be instrumental in their finishing part of the creative process.
